KNOX LAC Remembrance Day Message – 11 November 2020

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Almost a million Australians, both men and women, served in the Second World War.

As we stop at 11am for a minutes silence, reflect on the meaning of the day, and we listen to the last post being played, we remember all men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.

For the Fallen
By Laurence Binyon

For the Fallen is a poem written Laurence Binyon which has become synonymous with both ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies.

It was specifically composed in honour of the casualties of the British Expeditionary Force in the opening action of the war on the Western Front of World War I. Binyon wrote the poem immediately following the retreat from the Battle of Mons.

The most well known part of the poem is the 4th stanza, which has became known as the Ode of Remembrance and has been used in association with commemoration services in Australia from 1921. The third stanza is often read out as part of the Ode and it provides a reminder of the sacrifice made.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them

Take a moment today, stop at at 11am and think of the words above.

To all men and women in uniform who are currently serving at home or abroad and to those who have served in the past, we thank you for your service.

Lest We Forget

Working Bee – Thank you

A quick thank-you to all the families that turned up the working bee on Sunday. We had a great turn out over a few hours to get the centre ready fo the try out day and the season.

Thank you to everyone for using the sign in QR code and the ensuring we were meeting covid 19 requirements, wearing face masks and meeting the social distancing requirements to get the work done.

A special mention needs to go to George Dyer, Knox Athletics (Seniors) who put in a great effort in the Mini Olympics area to get the long jump ready for new sand and tidied up the area for our littlest Athletes. This was after a training run in the morning with his training group! Thanks George great effort to help us out.

We also had a visit from Susan Laukens, the new councillor for Friberg Ward in Knox. Susan spent a few hours helping out and meeting the club members. Thank you Susan.

For those that did turn up and signed in, we will have refunds for your $30 dollar working bee levy available when season starts.
