Relays

The first and one of the most exciting events in the Track & Field season is Relays. For U9 – U17 athletes relays present a unique opportunity for athletes to compete as part of a team. The Centre has a proud and successful history of competition in Relays and will offer Knox athletes the opportunity to join a relay squad in the Summer Track & Field season.

To prepare for relay squads for competition the age group coaches will provide several training sessions leading up to competitions days. These sessions are important for team development.

Every athlete that nominates for Relays will be included in a relay squad and will be given every opportunity to performance at their best.

Training is provided – ability is not important.

If you are interested in being part of the traditionally strong Knox Relay Team please contact the Relay Coordinator or the age group coach.

Relay Team Selection Criteria

To prepare relay squads for competition the nominated age group coach(s) will provide several training sessions leading up to the competition days.
Attendance at these training sessions are very useful for the athletes’ general development but is also an important factor in squad selection.
It is important to note that as a team event, relays require commitment from all involved. Squads cannot easily adapt should athletes ‘drop out’. Commitment to the team, once given, must be followed through to the end.

Relay Teams selection is primarily based on performance at weekly Knox competition with the final decision on Team Selection by the Age Group Coach with consultation with the Relay Coordinator and Knox President. Relay squads/teams are selected based on their potential to progress from Region to State, with ultimately the ability to secure a State final position. In so doing every effort is made to progress as many athletes as possible.

Other Factors that are used to determine athletes’ selection include:
• Athletes’ performance over relay distances
• Attitude and attendance at training
• Athletes’ proficiency in relay race technique – baton changing etc.
• General Attitude and being a ‘team’ member

Regardless of the above criteria, every athlete that nominates for relays will be included in a relay squad and will be given every opportunity to perform to the best of their ability.

Relay competition includes the following events for athletes Under 9-17:
Athletes can be chosen in up to 4 events;
