From the Knox LAC Executive Committee – Track Refurbishment – Update No. 2

With more than the first half of the season complete and as we are heading into the Christmas break, the Executive Committee would like to provide the centre an update on the current progress of the track refurbishment.

There have been a number of meetings between the tenant clubs (Knox Seniors and Little Aths) and the council since the update in August. These meetings have been important to ensure that the design of the track upgrades include all of the necessary equipment we need to conduct athletics. Knox council have also included some extra design features which will make our track even better.

With the design changes, this has meant that there has been a delay in finalising the project design and the budget for the project. Tender documentation has been released by Knox Council, and the tender period is due to close on 20 January 2023. The cost of works does still need to be approved by council and will happen at a council meeting in the new year.

Once the final design is approved, we will of course provide a copy of the plans. This will give you an opportunity to see what the track changes will look like.

Our Season will resume at the Knox Track after the Christmas Break on the 21st Jan 2023, and we will continue at our track until Council provides a firm start date for the project. We do have flexibility in our season, and we have options if we need to use them, if the start date for refurbishment interferes with the rest of the season.

FAQ’s

Will we be moving to another track?
At this stage we will continue to be at the Knox Track for as long as we can. This may mean we will finish the season at Knox and it is dependant on start dates provided by Knox Council. If we do need to finish our season at another track we have an agreement with Ringwood to be able to use their facility on a Sunday if we need to.

Where will we be conducting training sessions?
Training at the Centre will resume after the Christmas break as scheduled. Those that are involved with relay teams, relay training will resume after Christmas and will be at the Knox Track through to State Champs in February. Please check with your relay coach. The Committee is working with other centres with regard to training if we need to move training locations once the works begin.

When are the works starting?
The final project design and costs need to be approved at a council meeting. This is now scheduled to happen in the new year. At this point we do not have a start date for the works.

Can the season finish early?
We started the season early to give the centre the best opportunity to get a full season. If the council provides a start date that does not suit our current calendar, we are flexible around the finish date of our season, and when we can hold our Championship Day. Our season is still scheduled to finish in March after State Champs, however we can finish earlier if we need to to suit the track works.
