Covid Update 12 August 2021 – State Cross Country Championship Cancelled

LAVic this evening advised centres that the due to the ongoing Covid situation that it was becoming increasing difficult to hold the State Cross Country Championship. LAVic have therefore decided to cancel the event.

LAVic advised in a memo:

The disappointing decision has been taken to cancel the 2021 State Cross-Country Championships (currently postponed).

The State Government ‘Public Event Framework’, under which LAVic is permitted to conduct its Region and State events, has been suspended indefinitely; further, the conditions for its phased re-introduction is unknown. This, in addition to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the extension of the current lockdown for Metropolitan Melbourne until at least Thursday 19th August, were major factors in these decisions. LAVic cannot confidently deliver these events safely or credibly any time soon.

We understand that – as with the cancellation of other Region Carnivals and State Championship events over the past 18 months – this will greatly disappoint our Little Aths community, and in particular, those athletes that have continued to train in the hope that the State Cross-Country Championships might be held.

While this is disappointing for the cross country season, no decision has been made on the future of the Knox Cross Country Championship Day or the Presentation Night. We are are monitoring updates and will advise members as the situation unfolds.

The Executive Committee continues to move ahead with planning for the summer track and field season. Please look out for further announcements over the coming week.
